Best Idea of the Year?
Anyone else not seen the Coke Polar Bowl? Well here it is.
I'm not sure how I missed this. But it's one of the best ideas of the year in my opinion. I was shown this by Framestore and was literally bowled over by it.
It's simple, during the Superbowl you could go to cokepolarbowl.com and watch two Coca Cola Polar Bears reacting in real-time to the game.
Great idea, but what really impresses me is the insight it's based on.
It's a common truth (and a great insight to build a new idea/platform on) that we all sit watching TV with our laptop, tablet or smart phone by our side.
We all do it. Update our status, follow what people are saying about TV shows etc etc.
This idea owns that second screen for the entire Superbowl and does something interesting and funny.
That's four hours of engagement for a fraction of what it costs to run an ad at half time.
But being Coke, they still did a half time TV spot. But they integrated it with this idea. Watch below.
So what would make me engage for four hours? It's a good question and one that this idea has really nailed.
The Polar Bears reacted to everything. The National Anthem, first downs, fouls, touch downs, bad calls. They even started doing the Vogue dance during Madonna's half time show. This went down a treat on twitter.
However, there's only so long that people would stay interested with these gimmicks of the bears reacting to touchdowns. It's fun but it's good that this idea had more.
Social platforms were used as well. People could Tweet to the Polar Bears and you saw them respond to people and show they profile photos.
The Polar Bears reacted in so many different ways it kept the interest up. You didn't know what they were going to do next.
I'd give my left nut to create and produce work as good as this. Titanium Lion for the Bears i think.
The agency that did this was Wieden and Kennedy, Portland.

Look Around
This is an interactive music video for Red Hot Chili Peppers new single 'look around'.
You can literally look around the four rooms that the band members are each playing in.
The embed mode is a nice touch.

MINI GETAWAY
Great digital idea time boys and girls.
This is a location based game for Mini. Digital Example's blog calls it a 'high tech version of tag.' Simply download the app and try and find the virtual Mini that is on another persons phone. If you get within 50 meters of them you'll take the virtual mini off them and be the target for everyone else.
More info here.
From Jung von Matt in Stockholm. Well done guys.

French Connection Youtique

This is really nice use of the interactive Youtube video feature. A stylist shows you outfits and you can click on the video and buy them. It's a great for a clothes brand and i can see Levi and Diesel adding this function in as standard. It just makes sense to be able to click the video and buy the clothes. In fact any product could use this, and probably should.
Also, I'm a sucker for a portmanteau. Youtique.... you clever people you.
Have a look at the channel here.

Online and offline and online again!!!

We’ve just finished working on a great pitch. Digy Roy has been away so I’ve been a lone creative for the end of it. But it was still a lot of fun.
The client has to stay anonymous for now, but they are on my list of “cool brands” and if this work saw the light of day it would be a massive cross channel idea.
Working on this pitch campaign the last few weeks made me remember of past “massive” online/offline campaigns. The one in particular that I really like is Year Zero that 42 Entertainment did for Nine Inch Nails. It got the grand prix at Cannes, which it honestly did deserve.
The overview can be found here and offers a quick look at what was a totally immersive experience for the audience. It actually eclipses their Dark Knight viral efforts.
The online/offline experience was amazing, flash drives hidden at gigs, CD’s that reacted to body heat to reveal a message, hidden phone numbers, websites, events, posters and a mini underground political type movement. This campaign had it all and then even more!
What was cool about the idea was it was scaleable. It allowed the audience to delve into this Year Zero world as far as they wanted to go. They could still get a good experience by just buying the CD and getting the hidden content from that.
It's also really cool to see something that takes you online to offline and online again. The two worlds merge to become something bigger than the channels you decide to use. it does help that the campaign was an album promo which people like, i can't see Year Zero working for a washing powder.
This kind of stuff is so inspiring to see. I reckon this is what digital is heading towards on a regular basis, well for the brands that have a very loyal audience and are deemed "cool" e.g Nike, Apple etc.
Brand awareness that hits every channel and allows the audience to decide whether they take it on or not. They could see a poster that would take them to the internet on their phone, keeping them involved until they access the site at home. Cool stuff!

Marines. It's a state of mind.

These Recruitment adverts for the Marines deserved more than the space they had online. These push the boundaries of what's achievable when it comes to banner advertising. Who would have thought you could get the quality of a TV advert into a banner!

The Biggest Human Snake Ever!

We haven't really done a post about anything to do with digital advertising for ages, so we thought it was about time we mention a bit of it.
The Nokia N-Gage - "Get out and play" website is a good bit of digital by the Swedish agency Far Far, go here to check it out for yourself. It's great to see it not just existing on TV, if it did at all...we're not sure. The interactive element adds to the charm and means it's not just another video using stop motion. We also like the interactive loading screen (top image) that lets you play a simple arcade game while you wait.
Just watch as the main character moves about and begins to be joined by various people to create an insanely long Snake. It's obviously based around that very popular game that first appeared on Nokia handsets back in the 90s and the stop motion space invaders film by Guillaume Reymond. If you've never seen it, watch it here.
